The Pura Belpré Award

This award, established in 1996, goes to "a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth." It has been given every two years, so there are no new entries for 2007. In 2009, it will become an annual award. Like the Coretta Scott King Award, there are awards for both authors and illustrators.
